Notes about using this wiki:

1.  Do not edit this wiki frontpage.

2.  When you log on, never "steal the key" from anyone else; the wiki will get tied up and both people's work will be lost.

3.  Make your decisions, edit, and quickly log off.  If you stay logged on, others cannot schedule themselves!

Welcome to SPAN 232: Spanish in the Community!

NEW! SPAN 332: Trabajo en equipo

In this course you will spend half of your time in the classroom and half of your time working in the community

IS SPAN 232 RIGHT FOR YOU? The overwhelming majority of students feel that they learn a lot in the class and enjoy their work in the community. However, this course is not for everyone.  You may be too busy to spend 28 hours in the community. Think of your schedule this semester; is it realistic to work in the community and travel to your work place?  You may like your learning to be very structured.  Or perhaps you don't like to use technology (such as this "wiki").  If so, you should seriously consider whether this course is for you or not.  There are many students who want to pick up this course, but it is full.  Please do them a favor and drop the course now while they can still pick it up.

YOUR WORK: In all you need to work 28 hours in the community during the semester. Generally, that means you should work two hours a week, each week, and that is what you will sign up for here in this wiki. However, sometimes it isn't possible to work two hours every single week (for example: the office/school is closed for a holiday on "your" day; school is cancelled because of bad weather and/or a Teachers' Institute Day; you sign up for the course late; your criminal background check takes more than expected to process; etc.)  In ALL those cases you will need to work with your community partner to find ways to work a total of 28 hours by the last week of classes. (You may work during finals week and Spring Break, but it isn't required.) It is your responsibility to work around unexpected problems and find ways to complete those 28 hours to get credit for the CBL part of the course (which is 15% of your grade). Sometimes throughout the semester the course coordinators might send information about new projects within the community where you can participate and add those hours to your schedule as well (i.e. teacher-parent conferences at school, translation projects, etc.)

If you do not want to receive an e-mail every time the wiki is updated (and who does?), then follow these instructions:

How to stop receiving pbwiki updates

Login to the wiki:

1. Click on "account" (top right corner, under your email)

2. In that page (MyPbwiki), click on the HOME tab

3. In "My wikis", next to the wiki name, there is a "enable notifications". If that option is checked, you are receiving updates of every single change in the wiki, to stop receiving them, simply uncheck it.

INSTRUCTIONS: In order to get off to a good start in this course, please follow these instructions to sign up for your community partner now:

1.  Read about the community partners

2.  Scroll down this page and click on the name of the community partner with which you want to work and then:

  • Click below on your chosen partner's wiki site.
  • At the top of the partner's page click on "Edit", and wait for the complete page to load (be patient; not waiting might result in a complete deletion of that wiki section).
  • Type your information (name and NetID) in the specific spots for a total of 2 weekly hours (i.e. 4 spots of half an hour each, 2 spots of one hour, etc.).
  • Click "Save" at the bottom of the page.
  • Immediately log out so others can enter their schedule.
  • Check the page to make sure you did not accidently delete information.  If you did, log back on, go to that page again and click "Page history."  There you can restore the previous version.

3. Check the instructions for that the community partner you chose to see what your next step is.  For example, if you work at a school you might need to submit a form for your background check, etc...You need to complete those steps AS SOON AS you sign in the wiki.

4.  Click here to see information about the orientations sessionsOrientation.

5. Once the semester begins and you start your community-service learning work, you must log all your hours at the community partner (they might have special sheets for you to do so) as well as here in the wiki. There is a folder named "Work Logs" with one site for every section (look for the folder on the right side of this wiki, or click on your individial section work log at the bottom of this site). Enter your section's work log and add your hours EVERY WEEK (same process: at the top of that page click on "Edit", wait for the page to load, type your information, then click "Save" at the bottom of your section's work log wiki).

A note about course "shopping":

We are aware that Spanish courses are notoriously difficult to get into and that some students enroll in whatever Spanish course they can because of that.  Students also sometimes shop for courses, enrolling in as many as possible and then dropping whatever does not match their needs.  However, this is not an appropriate course to “shop” for several reasons:

  • There is a heavy administrative load for us to set up each and every student with their community partner.
  • The community partners invest significant time and energy to accept our students, give them orientations and integrate them into their organizations.  If we waste their time, our partnerships with them suffer.
  • This is more than just a class.  You will be working with people in the organizations and the Latina/o clients they serve.  If you drop the course weeks into the semester, you are “dropping” people, not just a course.  This is entirely inappropriate and reduces our credibility in the community, something that is not easily regained.
  • We receive many, many e-mails from students who want to register for this course because it matches their career goals as well as their personal commitment to community service and activism.  If you are not serious about this course, please drop now so that these other students may pick it up.

Good luck, and have a great semester in this course and all your other classes!

Ann Abbott
